KiraArghy During the Norman invasion, French was the language of aristocracy & govt whereas English was the language of the people. That's why we often have 2 or 3 words for the same thing, the less formal version is Anglo-Saxon in origin and more formal is Romance (from Norman French)

KiraArghy E.g. "need" vs "require", "used to" vs "accustomed to"

KiraArghy In fact when I taught English to Spanish students they found it a lot easier to understand when I spoke in a "higher register" (ie using more formal words) as the words were from a similar root to Spanish (Romance language family)

KiraArghy This also applies to meat vs animals - the aristocracy ate beef, pork and poultry; the workers raised cows, pigs and chickens (and couldn't afford to eat them)
