  1. In my early 20s I was starting a degree in Linguistics (having been rejected from Cambridge!) after dropping out of uni the first time round, with no idea what I wanted to do with my life.       I recognise that this is a privileged place to be starting from, but my point is that it's not necessary to know exactly where you want to be when you're 20. Jobs I considered before tech: makeup artistry, teaching, social media PR (never again urgh), buying & merchandising

        I work with several excellent programmers who have no university degree. my degree was fascinating but ultimately only useful for being the annoying person at parties who has an anecdote about etymology

          I often find myself wishing I'd done maths at A-level and gone straight into CS, but then I'd never have done the other things like join SHEChoirLDN, train as a teacher, meet my husband at a random party, or be the annoying person at parties who has anecdotes about etymology
