      I recognise that this is a privileged place to be starting from, but my point is that it's not necessary to know exactly where you want to be when you're 20. Jobs I considered before tech: makeup artistry, teaching, social media PR (never again urgh), buying & merchandising

        I work with several excellent programmers who have no university degree. my degree was fascinating but ultimately only useful for being the annoying person at parties who has an anecdote about etymology

          I often find myself wishing I'd done maths at A-level and gone straight into CS, but then I'd never have done the other things like join SHEChoirLDN, train as a teacher, meet my husband at a random party, or be the annoying person at parties who has anecdotes about etymology

            Also the great story of how I worked for a month in a social media agency where my job was literally to tweet about eyebrows and book bikini waxes for people in New York at 5pm on a Sunday
